4th Men's Sub-Junior Nationals: Delhi, SAI, Hockey Gangpur, Gujarat in semis


Extending their winning run, Delhi sailed past Citizens Hockey XI 5-2 in a Pool B clash to storm into the semifinals of the 4th National Sub-Junior Men’s ‘B’ Division Hockey Championship being played at Vadodara, Gujarat.

The Delhi outfit took the lead through Kuldeep but Citizen Hockey XI hit back with Rohit Ghrai’s PC goal in the 17th minute.  Delhi were unperturbed by the equalizing goal and struck twice in quick succession. Nitin Ram made the scoreline 2-1 before Kuldeep scored his second goal to help his side lead 3-1 at half-time.

Citizen Hockey XI put up stiff resistance in the second half and reduced the deficit through Parvez Alam in the 42nd minute. From here on the debutants had the opportunity to force the match in their favour, but Delhi killed off all such hope nailing in two more goals. Kuldeep completed a fine hat-trick while Arun Kumar netted the fifth goal.

Delhi are joined in the semifinals by Sports Authority of India (SAI) who crushed Jammu & Kashmir 6-1 in their final Pool A tie. Hockey Gangpur- Odisha and hosts Gujarat joined Delhi and SAI in the last four stage. In Pool B Rajasthan edged Puducherry 2-1.


Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh kickstarted their campaign in the 4th Hockey India Sub- Junior Women’s National ‘B’ Division Championship with a bang humbling Gujarat 4-0 at Haldwani, Uttarakhand.


In other games of the day, Bhopal swamped Vidarbha 5-2 while Sports Authority of India (SAI) edged Uttarakhand 1-0.
