Spunky Japan hold Black Sticks 1-1

New Zealand men’s hockey team were denied a win by spunky Japan, who netted a final minute goal through Ippei Fujimoto to settle for a 2-2 draw in the first of the three match series.

It was the Black Sticks, who called the shots from the outset and shot into the lead when Steve Edwards dodged past two Japanese defenders before rifling home a reverse shot in the 7th minute. The Black Brigade were sitting pretty when StephenJenness rattled the Japanese cage following a great run in the opposition ‘D’.

Japan refused to throw in the towel and asked questions to the New Zealand defence and soon reduced the deficit via Ippei Fujimoto as the hosts went into half-time with a 2-1 lead.

Both teams had their chances in the second half, but goals eluded them until the final minute of play when Japan’s first goal-scorer Ippei Fujimoto saved the day for his side.
