Senior Nationals: Rani-inspired Railways hammer Bihar 24-0 to reach semifinals

Star-studded Railways Sports Promotion Board bulldozed Hockey Bihar 24-0 to reach the semifinals of the 4th Hockey India Senior Women’s National ‘A’ Division being played in Bhopal. The slew of national players turning out for Railways stood them in good stead as they all came to the party.

As many as five Railway girls -  Rani, Poonam Rani, Vandana Kataria, Soundriya Y and Joydeep Kaur racked up hat-tricks. Rani led the goal deluge scoring five times, while Poonam Rani struck four times. Deepika and Th. Chanchan fired a brace while Anupa Barla and Jasjeet Kaur scored one each.

In fact, the Railway forwardline were so devastating that the likes of Rani and Soundriya Y got their hat-tricks in the first half itself as they led 12-0 at half-time.

Defending champions Hockey Haryana smashed Chhattisgarh Hockey 13-0 to join RSPB in the last-four stage. Haryana rode on hat-tricks from Navneet Kaur and Navjot Kaur to pull off a lop-sided win. Hockey Jharkhand also entered the semifinals after drubbing Mumbai Hockey Association 8-1, while Punjab is the fourth team to make it to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Haryana face Jharkhand, while Railways meet Punjab.

In other inconsequential league games, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy pipped Hockey Odisha 4-1, while Bhopal humbled Sports Authority of India 3-1. Karnataka whipped Kerala 5-2.
