Asian Games Men’s Hockey Qualifiers: Oman post 2nd win, pip Sri Lanka 3-2, hosts Bangladesh rout Hong Kong 5-1

Strong contenders Oman churned out their second straight win edging out Sri Lanka 3-2 in a Pool A clash of the Asian Games Men’s Hockey Qualifiers being played at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium in Dhaka. Rajab Basim Khatar put Oman ahead in the 11th minute before Sri Lanka levelled the issue close to half-time through Lahiru Gihan Weerasooriya. Drag-flicker Mahmood Ashoor Ramadhan swung the game in Oman’s favour first helping his side regain the lead off a PC conversion in the 45th minute before enhancing the lead a few minutes later.

With seven minutes remaining for the final hooter, Sri Lanka seemed to be pushing for a down-to-the-wire contest when Lahiru Gihan Weerasooriya reduced the deficit, but Oman held firm in the dying moments to glean full points from the game.

Oman had earlier pipped Chinese Taipei by a solitary goal in their tournament opener. Chinese Taipei, meanwhile, shrugged off its opening game loss to put it across Qatar 2-1 – which leaves the latter winless along with Sri Lanka after both teams played out a 1-1 draw.

Hosts Bangladesh launched their campaign in style, routing Hong Kong 5-1 in a Pool B, tie riding on a sizzling hat-trick by captain Mamunur Rahman Chayan and in the same group, Singapore rallied to defeat Iran 3-2.

It may be noted that the top six finishers will qualify for the 2014 Asian Games to be held in Incheon, Korea in September.
