Black Sticks men pip Japan 2-0 in 2nd Test

New Zealand men’s hockey team overcame first half resistance from Japan to script a 2-0 win in the second Test at Mount Maunganui. The Black Sticks were kept at bay by the tenacious Japanese defence in the first thirty-five minutes of play before they broke the logjam in the second half.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 7th minute of the second half through a penalty corner goal by Kane Russell. They doubled the lead four minutes from the final hooter when Andy Hayward fired home a drag-flick off a PC set-piece.

New Zealand thus have taken a 1-0 lead in the three Test series having drawn the opening Test 2-2. The final Test will be played on Friday.
