Senior Nationals: CAG down Punjab 3-1 to reach semifinals; Bhopal eves win big


Comptroller & Auditor General sprang a surprise putting it across runners-up Punjab 3-1 in a Pool B tie to reach the semifinals of the 4th Hockey India Senior Men’s National ‘A’ Division Championship being played at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium here in Lucknow.

The CAG outfit exuded nerves of steel rallying from being a goal down at half-time to turn the tables on their opponents. Parvinder Singh gave Punjab the lead in the closing stages of the first half before CAG equalized in the second half when Darshan D S converted a penalty corner.

The match seemed headed for a draw until CAG struck twice in the final seven minutes of play to collect full points. Darshan D S again made it count off a short corner before Sarvjeet Singh notched up the insurance goal with a minute remaining for the final hooter.

In another Pool B game Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy edged out Manipur 3-2. In Pool A Air India Sports Promotion Board routed Association of Indian Universities 7-2.

Meanwhile, in the 4th Senior National Women’s ‘A’ Division Championship, defending champions Haryana beat Madhya Pradesh 2-1 in a Pool A tie. Bhopal walloped Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd 14-1 in a Pool C game. Railway Sports Promotion Board smashed Uttar Pradesh 20-0 while Odisha hammered Chhattisgarh 12-1. Maharashtra crushed Kerala 7-0 in another game.
