World Hockey League Final: Netherlands surprise hosts Argentina to set up final date with Australia

Olympic champions Netherlands poured cold water on the hopes of Argentina of winning the FIH Women’s Hockey World League final round crown, beating the hosts 3-2 in a penalty shootout after both teams were locked 2-2 in regulation time in San Miguel de Tucuman.

Maartje Paumen led from the front for the Dutch, giving her side an early lead to stun the home crowd to silence.

The Las Leonas evened the contest through Martina Cavallero following a superbly crafted move by Agustina Alberarrio.

Argentina went ahead when Rosario Luchetti scored off a short corner routine. The Netherlands restored parity in the 56th minute via Roos Drost.

The Dutch will now meet Australia in the final. The Hockeyroos humbled England 3-0. Jodie Schultz, Georgie Parker and Karrie McMahon scored for the Aussies.

Meanwhile at the 10th Junior Men’s World Cup in New Delhi, Belgium crushed Egypt 5-0 while Germany belted Pakistan 6-1 in Pool A. Netherlands sneaked past Korea 3-2.
