Argentinean hockey star Luciana Aymar named 2013 FIH Player of the Year

Argentinean famed women’s hockey player Luciana Aymar was named the 2013 FIH Player of the Year during the just-concluded Hockey World League Final tourney in San Miguel de Tucuman.

The celebrated striker won the coveted award for the phenomenal eighth time. Aymar first won the FIH Player of the Year award in 2001 before going to win the same on two consecutive occasions in 2004 and 2005.

The veteran forward bagged the award for four years on the trot – 2007-2010.

The award is some consolation for Aymer, who failed to guide the Las Leonas to Hockey World League glory in their own backyard. Argentinean eves lost to the Netherlands in the semifinals and their woes were further compounded when they were ousted in the bronze medal play-off by England again through the penalty shootout route. In fact, she missed her shot during the shootout against the Netherlands.

The 36-year-old Aymar is the oldest ever recipient of an FIH Player of the Year award. She helped Argentina win the Pan American continental championship and was in dazzling form at the Argentina Hockey World League Final, before penalty shootout brought about their tournament exit.
