Investec London Cup: England men brush aside 12th ranked South Africa 7-0




England men’s hockey team continued their impressive run in the Investec London Cup Hockey Tournament being played at Lee Valley in London. The 5th ranked English outfit drubbed 12th ranked South Africa 7-0 to significantly brighten their chances of making it to the final.

South Africa, who were stunned 2-4 by lower ranked Ireland in their first game, came a cropper against England who rode roughshod over them. Ashley Jackson scored a brace for the second consecutive time and was ably supported by Nick Catlin who also notched a brace. Barry Middleton, Simon Mantell and Mark Gleghorne scored a goal each to put the South Africans virtually out of the final race.

Meanwhile, 15th ranked Ireland were brought down to earth after their win over South Africa in their tournament opener, huffing and puffing their way to a 1-1 draw with 24th ranked Scotland.

England women – ranked sixth in the world - pipped 11th ranked South Africa 2-1 to register their second win on the trot after having thrashed 3nd ranked Wales 8-0 in their opening tie. With two wins from as many games, England eves are looking good to make it to the final. 16th ranked Scotland, who suffered a 0-2 defeat to South Africa in their first game, hit winning ways brushing aside Wales 5-0.
