Hawke's Bay Hockey Festival: New Zealand eves lose narrowly to Argentina

New Zealand women’s hockey team lost 2-3 to Argentina in the Hawke's Bay Festival of Hockey in Hastings. The hosts, ranked fifth in the world, suffered an early setback when Carla Rebecchi put the Las Leonas ahead in the opening stanza.

Luciana Aymar doubled the lead in the second half before the Black Sticks mounted a serious fightback with goals from Anita Punt and Kayla Whitelock as the scoreline read 2-2. The match could have gone either way, but it was second ranked Argentina who rode on Carla Rebecchi’s 67th minute goal to glean full points.

In other league games, fourth ranked Australia humbled seventh ranked China 4-0 while eighth ranked Korea edged out ninth ranked Japan 3-2. Earlier in the second round of matches, New Zealand went down 1-2 to China, Australia scraped past Korea 1-0 while Argentina drubbed Korea 5-1.

The Black Sticks launched their campaign humbling Korea 3-1, while Argentina defeated Australia 3-0 and China got the better of Japan 2-0. Argentina lead the table with three wins from as many games, while China and Australia are behind them with two wins from three matches.
