Uttar Pradesh Wizards pip Kalinga Lancers 3-1

Uttar Pradesh Wizards returned to winning ways putting it across debutants Kalinga Lancers 3-1 in the 2nd Hero Hockey India League at the Dhyan Chand Sports College in Lucknow. The win helped the Wizards to advance to the third spot in the points table behind Jaypee Punjab Warriors and Delhi Waveriders.

Wizards captain Vokkaliga Raghunath gave the home crowd plenty to exult about when he converted a penalty corner in the 17th minute. Stung by the PC strike, the Lancers were pushed on the backfoot. The task became all the more daunting for the Orange brigade when Nikin Thimaiah extended the lead in the second quarter to ensure his side held a cozy 2-0 lead at half-time.

The Lancers showed signs of coming back into the contest when Argentine drag-flicker Gonzalo Peillat made the most of a short corner to reduce the deficit in the 59th minute.

The Odisha outfit had eleven minutes to equalize or
pull off a win, but the Wizards kept up the pressure, raiding their citadel on a consistent basis in the dying moments of the game.

Lancers were extremely well served by goalie Harjot Singh, who effected two high quality saves in the closing stages before the Wizards hammered the final nail in the Lancers’ coffin when the Dutch combo of Teun de Nooijer and Sandr Baart conjured up the third goal with the format rattling the opposition cage off an assist from the latter.

The Wizards now have 21 points from seven games.
