Delhi Waveriders snuff out Kalinga Lancers’ challenge

Delhi Waveriders overcame a stern challenge from Kalinga Lancer before pulling off a thrilling 4-3 win in the 2nd Hero Hockey India League at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneshwar.

Kalinga Lancers, who caved in meekly against Delhi in their away game a few days back, were a transformed side in front of their boisterous home crowd as they fought hard to stay competitive against the last year’s runners-up side. The Lancers’ trio of Ryan Archibald, Aran Zalewski and Lucas Villa kept the attacks going and ensured it was not a one-way traffic like their earlier away clash.

But it was Delhi Waveriders who opened the account in the first quarter when Rupinder Pal Singh converted their first penalty corner, sending his drag-flick to the left of hapless Harjot Singh.
The Odisha crowd went amok when Argentinean Lucas Villa put the Lancers on level terms. Villa converted a penalty stroke sending German Nicolas Jacobi the wrong way after the former was unfairly tackled by Rupinder Pal Singh.

New Zealand Simon Child once again pulled Waveriders ahead when he essayed a brilliant reverse hit, which beat Harjot Singh all ends up. Simon Childs was at it again, lunging forward to convert a half chance to make the scoreline 3-2 in favour of Waveriders.

The brace from Simon Child refused to dent the morale of Lancers as they went for the jugular. It was the turn of another Argentinean Gonzalo Peillat to make the most of one of the three PCs they earned in the third quarter to make it 2-3.

Going into the fourth quarter desperately needing an equalizer, Spain’s Ramon Alegre did the needful for the Lancers, deflecting a PC drag-flick off Gonzalo Peillat. But their joy was short-lived as the Waveriders sneaked in the fourth goal through national hockey selector-cum-player Arjun Halappa.

The Lancers made a valiant attempt to force a draw in the dying moments but the Waderiders held firm to bag full points.
