Kalinga Lancers wows home crowd with historic first win over Magicians

Debutants Kalinga Lancers gave their home crowd an opportunity to party hard as they scripted their first win of the 2nd Hero Hockey India League, edging out Dabur Mumbai Magicians 2-1 at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneshwar.

The Orange brigade gave the delirious spectators just what the doctor ordered, forcing a penalty corner in the 3rd minute but failed to profit from them. The Lancers, however, made up for that PC slip-up when Argentinean Lucas Villa triggered celebrations among their supporters tapping in a cross from Archibald.

The Magicians were pushed on the backfoot by the early goal even as the Lancers took control of the match. The Terry Walsh-coached side extended the lead in the second quarter through AranZalewski in the 26th minute.

The pep talk from coach MK Kaushik at the half-time break seemed to leave an impact as the Magicians reduced the margin in the 39th minute via Australian Glenn Turner when he foxed Lancers goalie Harjot Singh.

Trailing 1-2 going into the fourth quarter, the Magicians had a chance early on but Gurjinder missed a short corner Thereafter, the Lancers exerted sustained pressure and earned as many as three penalty corners, but India’s number one goalkeeper PR Sreejesh came to the rescue of the Magicians each time.

The Mumbai outfit had one last opportunity to force a draw when they won a PC in the final minute of play, but Gurjinder Singh’s power-packed flick was superbly saved by Harjot Singh.
