Rajpal dazzles in Delhi Waveriders' 5-3 win over Mumbai Magicians

Delhi Waveriders turned on the style, outclassing Dabur Mumbai Magicians 5-3 in the 2nd Hero Hockey India League at the Mahindra Hockey Stadium in Mumbai.

The green brigade called the shots from the starting hooter when Yuvraj Walmiki deflected a Akashdeep Singh rebound after Magicians and India’s number one goalkeeper PR Sreejesh padded it away.

The move was engineered by skipper Sardar Singh, who pierced the crowded defence to Matt Ghodes who laid it to Akashdeep. The Magicians brought things on level terms when Australian Glenn Turner Mumbai drew level when Glenn Turner slammed home a rebound from a Bharat Chhikara pass in the 10th minute.

The Waveriders refused to be dented by the equalizing goal from the Magicians – they again regained the lead when out-of-favour Indian striker and former captain Rajpal Singh pulled off a tumbling deflection off a Matt Wilson assist.

The Delhi outfit led 2-1 at half-time. Timothy Deawin brought the Magicians into the contest restoring parity early in the second half. Akashdeep Singh churned out a superb reverse hit goal to again pull the Waveriders ahead. Rajpal Singh soon added his second goal for the day before Rupinder Pal Singh whipped home a penalty corner to give Delhi cozy a 5-2 lead with twelve minutes to go for the final hooter.

Glenn Turner reduced the deficit in the 68th minute, but the Magicians had too much left to do as the Waveriders ran away with a comprehensive 5-3 win – their seventh in ten games. They are firmly perched on top of the points table with 39 points from ten games.

In another game, Jaypee Punjab Warriors edged out Uttar Pradesh Wizards 2-1. Punjab captain Jamie Dwyer gave his side the lead in the 21st minute.
Sandeep Singh doubled the lead eight minutes later when he scored from the rebound of his own penalty corner flick.

The Wizards reduced the deficit through Hugo Inglis, but that was all they could manage as the Warriors walked away with full points. The Warriors are placed second with 30 points from eight matches.
