Indian seek redemption against New Zealand after England disappointment

Hockey fans will be expecting for redemption when India take on New Zealand in the FIH Hockey World League Final at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday.

On a day when 11th ranked Argentina shocked mighty Netherlands 5-2, there was nothing special from the Blueshirts, who put up a listless performance against England and went down 0-2.

The Indian forwardline really needs to come to the party – the likes of SV Sunil, Dharamvir Singh and Mandeep Singh will have to spearhead the strike force which lacked cohesion against England. They need to create more scoring chances or at least short corner chances if India are to get past the Black Sticks.

The lesson from the first game is that the boys must dish out proper ball distribution and realize that merely holding possession is not enough. Sardar Singh has to make the midfield work overtime to not just blunt the opposition raids but also create pressure on the New Zealand citadel.

Vokkaliga Raghunath and Rupinder Pal Singh need to make their short corners count in situations where the team earns only a handful of PCs – as that could prove to be the key in tight matches.

Hockey fans will be hoping for an Indian resurgence on Saturday and one hopes our boys will not disappoint.
