New Zealand
women’s hockey team continued their marauding ways, drubbing 22nd ranked Canada
7-0 to set up a final date with Ireland in the Women’s Four Nations Hockey
Tournament being played in Dublin. The 15th ranked Irish eves sealed their
final berth after a scraping through with a solitary goal win over 20th ranked
Chile.
Earlier, New Zealand – ranked fourth in the world – had spanked Ireland 9-2 and Chile 10-0 in their first two games to wrap up their league phase on a high, rattling up a whopping 26 goals in three games. Ireland after a 2-9 drubbing at the hands of Black Sticks in their tournament opener, redeemed themselves easing past Canada 5-0 in their second game.
Chile had chalked up their only win against Canada – with a 2-0 margin. Canada, who are winless in the competition, will again face Chile for the third place play-off tie.
New Zealand looks an overwhelming favourite going into the final against Ireland, who can best hope to avoid a morale-pounding defeat or give their opponents a run for their money.
