Argentina’s women’s hockey team eased past South
Africa 4-1 in Mar Del Plata near Buenos Aires to make a clean sweep of the five
Test series. The world number two side struck first through Noel Barrionuevo before
eight-time World Player of the Year Luciana Aymar doubled the lead to take her
side into the half-time break with a two-goal cushion.
The 11th-ranked South Africa needed a strong second half display to stay in the contest and Celia Evans reduced the margin. Argentina fired home two more goals via Delfina Merino and Noel Barrionuevo (her second goal of the day) to script a facile 4-1 win.
Earlier, South Africa fought gamely in the fourth Test before they were edged out 2-3 by the Las Leonas. The South Americans had won the first three Tests in emphatic fashion. The current world champions started the series with a 6-1 win before routing South Africa 6-2 in the second Test. The blue-and-white brigade won the third Test 5-1.
It may be worth mentioning here that South African women had whitewashed Scotland in a five Test series. South Africa had won the first test 5-3, the second 4-2, the third 4-0 the fourth 5-0 and the fifth 4-1.
